Inspirational Presence: The Art of Transformational Leadership

The Controversies about Leadership

Most people think When in fact....
People are born to be leaders. Everyone is born to lead. We can all develop the skills.
Leadership only matters for people in executive roles. Everyone leads somewhere, sometime. In fact, it matters at every level of work as well as in your relationships and social settings.
You have to be smart to be a good leader. Social skills (emotional intelligence) make more difference in leadership than technical skills.
The best way to lead is to tell people exactly what to do. People actually get far better results when they are able to direct their own efforts and make their own choices. The job of a leader is to connect them to something they want to accomplish.
You have to have power or control over others to lead them. Personal power is far more effective than positional power in leadership. People express their free will in many ways, one of which is to choose whom they will follow.
Good leaders can make people change People only change when they choose too. Leadership style can either enable or disable the change process. In fact, most large scale change efforts fail because of the wrong leadership style.
